Good evening gals and ghouls!
If you’re like me, celebrating Halloween once a year IS NOT ENOUGH.
I’m sorry to yell but I feel very strongly that when a single day of the year brings you so much joy, that day needs to seep into every other miserable day that you can barely stand to slide through. Now I certainly don’t feel that way all of the time, but that’s because in my house, every day is Halloween.
If you can’t identify with wanting to celebrate the spookiest, scariest, funnest day of the year, let me explain.
I have always loved Halloween because it was a day where I could put on a silly costume and walk around with my brother, door to door, and receive free candy! Those who know me can feel in their bones how truly special it is to me to get chocolate for free and for little to no effort.
I didn’t really watch scary movies but it was the one day a year that I started to really look forward and count down to.
As I got older my dad introduced me to a lot of the horror classics that I’m so fond of today. As my heart raced and my eyes filled with wonder, I started to feel excited whenever a scary movie was available to watch. I would stroll through the aisles of Blockbuster looking at the VHS covers of Silence of the Lambs and Psycho and eagerly wait for the day that I would be able to watch them.
My scary movie collection was growing for Halloween countdown viewings and I starting collecting large movie sized posters of horror classics; Frankenstein monster, Dracula, Phantom of the Opera, and the Wolfman. That was the beginning and I still have them today.
I unknowingly started picking up more and more items that embodied this “Halloween” label, which just meant that it wasn’t common to keep skeletons up in your house all year.
But I am my father’s daughter. His own eccentric home made me feel like it was okay to have my haunting decorations up permanently and without apology.
I was finding my own style and my own decorative tendencies and filling my home with items that made me smile.
I didn’t smile because it made me think of Halloween, I smiled because I loved it. Because it’s okay to love things that are strange and unusual or peppy and happy or sparkly and glamorous or whatever it is that makes you smile to see it.
I don’t feel confined to just one “style”, I just am who I am and I like what I like and I just happen to love and adore the things that may keep someone else awake at night.
My every day is Halloween, what’s yours?
